Energy Vault Lands 1.25 GW Texas Off-Grid AI Power Deal

Energy storage developer partners to supply battery storage and AI controls for hyperscaler campus

Sustainable energy infrastructure leader Energy Vault has executed a milestone strategic commercial agreement to deploy 1.25 gigawatts of integrated power infrastructure for a hyperscaler AI data center campus in Texas. The grid-independent system is designed to provide rapid speed-to-power and high-reliability electricity to bypass utility transmission queues.

Key details

Under the strategic framework agreement, Energy Vault will supply battery energy storage systems (BESS), grid-forming power conversion systems (PCS), and AI infrastructure control software to support an initial deployment totaling 1.25 gigawatts (GW). The project combines Energy Vault's Federal Energy Opportunity Act-compliant batteries with turnkey power generation from an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner utilizing Caterpillar generator sets.

The fully integrated off-grid power systems are engineered to bring AI compute capacity online within 4 to 12 months, far faster than traditional utility interconnection schedules. Energy Vault expects the contract to generate between $500 million and $600 million in revenue during the second half of 2026 and throughout 2027.

Why this matters

The agreement highlights how hyperscaler developers are bypassing public utility grids to resolve the critical "speed-to-power" problem. With traditional grid connection queues in regions like Texas extending to several years, behind-the-meter generation paired with battery storage has emerged as the premier solution for accelerating gigawatt-scale AI campus development.

Context

As artificial intelligence models grow larger, training and inference demand unprecedented amounts of stable, continuous electrical power. Traditional utility interconnections are bottlenecked by grid capacity limitations. This contract is the largest single agreement in Energy Vault's history, showcasing its transition from standalone storage projects into integrated AI power infrastructure.

Risks and open questions

Deploying 1.25 GW of integrated Caterpillar generator sets alongside battery storage shifts high-volume fossil fuel combustion directly onto data center campuses. While the system provides essential grid stabilization and load balancing, running industrial generators on-site raises local air pollution and greenhouse gas emission concerns. Critics question whether massive off-grid fossil fuel generation defeats corporate net-zero carbon pledges.

What happens next

Energy Vault and its EPC partner will begin deploying the integrated power systems in Texas, targeting initial operations within the next year. Investors and industry analysts will watch the project closely during Energy Vault's earnings call on August 11, 2026, as a potential repeatability blueprint for off-grid hyperscale AI deployment across the United States.
