Generac Signs $8 Billion Backup Generator Deal With Amazon
Hyperscaler secures multi-year backup generator supply agreement to protect expanding data center footprint
Amazon has executed a multi-year deal with U.S. manufacturer Generac to supply industrial backup generators for its expanding AI data center infrastructure. The agreement includes $2.4 billion in initial deliveries over the next two years and could reach up to $8 billion in total orders as hyperscale power demands grow.
Key details
Under the terms disclosed in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Generac will supply multi-megawatt backup generator sets to Amazon data centers globally. Initial deliveries under the contract total $2.4 billion through 2028, with long-term options expanding the deal to $8 billion. Additionally, the agreement allows Amazon to acquire up to nearly 1.7 million shares of Generac stock at approximately $200 per share, with 300,000 shares available immediately.
The contract comes after Generac introduced a new line of data center generators ranging from 2.25 MW to 3.25 MW, featuring lead times between 50 and 60 weeks. To meet surging demand, Generac recently acquired switchgear and generator enclosure manufacturer Enercon, expanding production at its Wisconsin facilities.
Why this matters
As hyperscale AI workloads surge, data centers require immense standby power infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted operations during grid fluctuations and extreme weather events. Securing $8 billion in backup generation capacity highlights the massive capital commitments required to support grid-strained AI infrastructure and safeguard multi-gigawatt compute facilities against power outages.
Context
The deal follows a wave of supply chain investments by major cloud providers rushing to lock in critical electrical equipment. With lead times for high-capacity generators stretching beyond a year and grid interconnections facing multi-year delays across major U.S. markets, tech giants are increasingly securing direct long-term equipment manufacturing deals to prevent infrastructure bottlenecks.
What happens next
Generac will scale production at its Beaver Dam and Sussex facilities in Wisconsin to fulfill initial deliveries over the next 24 months. Amazon will progressively exercise stock purchase warrants as generator shipments and payments proceed.
