Google's upcoming data center in Botetourt County, Virginia, is set to become one of the tech giant's most water-intensive facilities in the world. Newly disclosed data reveals the site is contracted for 2 million gallons of water per day, highlighting the massive resource requirements of the expanding AI infrastructure.

According to data from Google’s 2026 environmental report, the Botetourt County site is contracted for 2 million gallons of water per day, or 730 million gallons per year. This initial phase alone would place it as the company's sixth-largest water consumer in the United States and eighth-largest globally.

Currently, the most water-intensive Google sites include Council Bluffs, Iowa (1,746 million gallons annually), Winschoten, Netherlands (1,401 million), and Mayes County, Oklahoma (1,396 million). Google has indicated that future expansions in Botetourt could eventually scale to 8 million gallons per day (2.92 billion gallons annually), potentially making it the company's largest facility in the world.

In Virginia, the Botetourt site will dwarf Google's existing operations. Its 2 million gallon daily draw is larger than the company's facilities in Bristow, Sterling, Leesburg, and Ashburn combined.

Why this matters

The Botetourt project demonstrates the extreme concentration of resource demands required by modern AI data centers. As hyperscalers race to build high-density compute capacity, water used for cooling is emerging as a critical bottleneck. The scale of this single project can fundamentally alter regional water management strategies and prioritize industrial cooling over other potential community uses.

Context

This expansion comes as Google's global resource consumption hits record levels. The company's 2026 Environmental Report noted a 34% year-over-year increase in water use and an 18% jump in greenhouse gas emissions. These spikes are driven primarily by the manufacturing and operation of AI-optimized hardware, which requires more intensive cooling than traditional cloud servers.

What happens next

Roanoke Valley officials are currently assessing the capacity of the regional water supply to handle the initial 2 million gallon load while maintaining buffers for residential growth. If Google triggers its options for an 8 million gallon daily expansion, the region may need to invest in new water source development, including major pipeline infrastructure and increased withdrawal permits from local rivers.
