Iberdrola and Echelon Launch €2 Billion AI Data Center Venture
Strategic alliance secures 700 MW to power Spanish hyperscale growth
Iberdrola and Echelon Data Centres have formed a strategic joint venture, Echelon Iberdrola Digital Infra, to invest over €2 billion in large-scale AI data centers across Spain. The partnership aims to address the soaring demand for AI infrastructure by leveraging renewable energy and secured grid connections.
Key details
The joint venture will focus on developing hyperscale facilities specifically designed for artificial intelligence workloads. Iberdrola has already secured more than 700 MW of electricity connections in strategic areas near Madrid to support the expansion.
The flagship project, Madrid Sur, is a 160,000 m² complex located in Fuenlabrada with 144 MW of processing capacity. The site has already secured a 230 MW electricity connection and is expected to consume approximately 1 TWh of energy annually. To mitigate the environmental impact, the campus will feature on-site photovoltaic solar generation and will be powered by 24/7 clean energy supplied by Iberdrola.
Why this matters
The deal represents the largest European joint venture between an energy utility and a data center developer, highlighting the critical role of power availability in the AI race. By integrating renewable generation directly with high-density compute infrastructure, the venture attempts to decouple AI growth from carbon-heavy grid reliance.
Context
Spain is emerging as a strategic digital hub for Europe, with over 70% of the continent's data traffic passing through its fiber and submarine cable networks. However, the rapid buildout of AI data centers has put immense pressure on local grids, forcing utilities like Iberdrola to take a more active role in infrastructure development and energy management.
Risks and open questions
While the project emphasizes renewable energy, the sheer scale of the 1 TWh annual demand raises questions about the long-term impact on regional energy prices and the capacity of the local grid to handle such concentrated loads. Additionally, the project's water consumption for cooling 144 MW of high-density AI servers remains a point of concern for local environmental groups.
What happens next
Commercial activity for Echelon Iberdrola Digital Infra is set to begin immediately following regulatory approvals. Construction on the Madrid Sur flagship project is expected to accelerate, with further projects totaling up to €6 billion in potential investment being explored by Iberdrola to meet future AI demand.
