Oracle has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking 2 GW of new renewable energy generation in New Mexico to support its under-development Project Jupiter AI campus. Alongside the energy procurement effort, the company announced an up to $1 million research grant to evaluate carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology for on-site fuel cells.

The RFP solicits solar, wind, geothermal, and other renewable energy projects located within New Mexico, prioritizing developers that can deliver capacity on an accelerated timeline. The power generated through these contracts will support Project Jupiter, a 2.5 GW, 1,400-acre AI data center campus being developed by Stack and BorderPlex Digital Assets with a total planned investment of up to $165 billion.

To meet initial power demands, Oracle previously expanded an agreement with Bloom Energy to supply 2.8 GW of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) at the New Mexico site. Because these fuel cells rely on natural gas, Oracle's new $1 million research grant will fund academic and non-profit studies into capturing CO2 emissions from Bloom fuel cells and identifying permanent geological storage options in New Mexico.

Oracle aims to achieve 100 percent carbon-free energy matching for Project Jupiter by 2031, aligning with New Mexico's Energy Transition Act goals ahead of its 2045 deadline.

Gigawatt-scale AI data centers require unprecedented amounts of electricity, forcing cloud operators to deploy on-site fuel cells and natural gas infrastructure when local power grids cannot deliver sufficient power.
