The initiative also highlights the staggering water requirements of high-density compute clusters. The UN projects that by the end of the decade, the industry's annual water usage could meet the basic needs of all 1.3 billion residents of sub-Saharan Africa. To combat this, the UN is calling on all AI companies to commit to powering 100% of their data center operations with renewable energy by 2030.
