According to the report, "Europe Water for Data Centers: Market Trends, Opportunities, and Forecasts, 2026–2036," approximately 62% of the projected €6.8 billion spending will be directed toward capital investments. These include advanced cooling systems, water treatment and reuse infrastructure, and municipal connections.

Under a high-growth scenario—driven by accelerated AI adoption and favorable permitting—spending could climb as high as €7.1 billion. The analysis notes that water availability is now emerging as a key factor alongside power access in determining project feasibility and site selection across the continent.

The study highlights that water is no longer a secondary concern but a critical design and operational constraint. As AI models require more intensive cooling, data centers are consuming larger volumes of water, often in regions already facing water stress.
